Blueberries and Brussels Sprouts Can Help Promote Brain Health

Joseph Coupal - Friday, January 28, 2011

We all know that there are a couple different foods that affect our brain health as well as certain vitamins and activities. And being an assisted living facility we like to stay on top of what affects the brain and the health of our patients. But there are two food items that we recently found out were excellent for brain health and we thought we'd share them with you all.

First blueberries. Blueberries contain powerful anti-oxidants to help fuel the brain, remove toxins, and reduce inflammation. Chemical compounds in blueberries can also boost neuronal signals and facilitate greater communication within the various regions of the brain. Blueberries have been found to increase memory in aging adults and may help counter symptoms associated with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.

Secondly are Brussels sprouts. Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin K and vitamin C.  Brussels sprouts are also a good source for tryptophan and essential omega fatty acids critical to healthy brain functioning. Brussels sprouts may boost DNA repair in cells and block the growth of cancer cells.

While researchers are constantly working on cures for Alzheimer's its good to know that even natural foods and vitamins in the world can help as well. It gives hope that even know this is a terrible affliction that is incurable at the present time, with so many things that help our body there has to be a way to prevent it. Keep hope alive and contact us today should you have any questions regarding Alzheimer's or know someone who is affected and needs help.

Recently 2 Medications Were Approved To Help Lessen Symptoms Of Alzheimer's

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, December 21, 2010

As many break throughs in the research of dementia and Alzheimer's continues researchers are getting closer and closer to find a proper medication for this terrible affliction. Recently some medications were approved that help with Alzheimer's. Although current medications cannot cure Alzheimer’s or stop it from progressing, they may help lessen symptoms, such as memory loss and confusion, for a limited time.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two types of medications — cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, Cognex) and memantine (Namenda) — to treat the cognitive symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, and problems with thinking and reasoning. While these are no cure it is still a huge step in helping to rid patients with Alzhiemer's

As Alzheimers progresses, brain cells die and connections among cells are lost, causing cognitive symptoms to worsen. While current medications cannot stop the damage Alzheimers causes to brain cells, they may help lessen or stabilize symptoms for a limited time by affecting certain chemicals involved in carrying messages among the brain's nerve cells. Doctors sometimes prescribe both types of medications together. Some doctors also prescribe high doses of vitamin E for cognitive changes of Alzheimer's disease. If you know a loved one who has suffered from this illness, contact us today and we'll be happy to help with any questions or do what we can for you and your loved one.

Another Memory Helping Program From Anne Basting

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, September 07, 2010

In one of our previous posts we talked about Anne Basting and how informative her work is. In our continuing quest to provide the very best of care and services, we've discovered some new and worthy information from Basting that we'd like to pass along. She calls it her "TimeSlips" program.

TimeSlips is a program created by Basting which teaches caregivers a fun and worthwhile activity for people caring for those with dementia or Alzheimer's. In the exercise, caregivers navigate a discussion that allows patients or residents to create their own stories. The focus is on creating new stories instead of dwelling on trying to remember old ones. The story is then weaved into "a poetic collage."

The experience that people have had from this program has been phenomenal. It is a great activity for both the care givers and the patients. Both get to weave a story into whatever their fantasies are, then express it to each other, which helps build memory. The program began as a simple exercise but now is practiced all over the nation. One of the biggest issues caregivers have when caring for their loved ones with memory loss is that they can't remember things that they once cared about. This avoids this fear and sadness altogether by creating new memories while their loved one can exercise their mind.

Someone explained that Alzheimer's and dementia is similar to wanting to say something but simply not having the words to say it. When we lift expectations of what "should" be said or "should" be remembered, we ignore that road block. TimeSlips is a great program. Learn more about TimeSlips at http://www.timeslips.org.
